Global Warming Is Probably Realon June 24, 2012 at 4:08 pm
sadly, i don’t know anything about science. i didn’t study it in school, and i never really learned. if i read XKCD, i have to google the jokes. it’s embarrassing, my ignorance, and it’s long been a problem. as a kid, it often made me the target of bullies: “you don’t even know about the periodic table?!” they’d say, as they punched me and took my lunch money…
i’m still not sure what they were talking about.
but despite my ignorance, i still gotta say, i feel like global warming is probably real. sitting in my apartment this week, hot and miserable, the fact there’s a problem was abundantly clear — climate change is real and it makes my butt sweat.
and there’s an old episode of This American Life, where they profile a teenager skeptical of global warming. she’s bright, political, and has opinions on climate change: “global warming is propaganda,” she proudly proclaims. so they confront her with evidence, the science and stuff, and by the end of the segment, she’s not sure what to believe — is science really just a partisan tool? is it possible that research is kinda’ subjective? isn’t deodorant more fun from an aerosol can?
but i think i’m willing to trust science on this one. not because i know science, but because i’ve seen the opposition. those who deny climate change don’t do it because of evidence, it’s because sometimes we only see the things we only want to see. and holy shit, ideology can be a scary thing.
did i mention how all this really makes my butt sweat?
